Mother's Day is coming up in a couple of weeks time on the 6th March. A unique idea to spoil your mum is with Traditional Afternoon Tea. Why not bake your own cake, Mum's are definitely worth the effort. This Victoria Sponge recipe is super easy but does take a little time to put it all together.
I've pimped it up with a cream cheese icing. Decorate with lots of fruits for a real wow factor.
You’ll need…
For the cake…
8oz butter
8oz caster sugar
8oz self raising flour
4 large eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
For the filling…
Raspberry jam
For the icing…
6oz cream cheese
2oz butter
4oz icing sugar
Vanilla essence
2 punnets of mixed fruits
To make…
Take a large mixing bowl add the butter and
soften in the microwave for 30seconds. Sift in the flour and sugar, beat in the
eggs and finally add the baking powder. Mix together until smooth.
Grease two 20cm cake tins, and turn the
mixture out evenly into the two tins.
Bake for 25mins until risen, test it’s
cooked by putting a skewer into the centre of the cake. If it
comes out clean
it’s done. Allow to cool or a wire rack.
Once cool spread the jam onto the top of
one of the cakes.
Add the other cake to the top, then make
your icing.
Add your butter to a bowl and microwave for
30seconds.
Sift in the icing sugar and mix in the
cream cheese, add a few drops of vanilla essence and blend together until
smooth.
Put in the fridge for 10mins if it’s too
runny.
Take the icing and smooth over the top of
the cake, decorate with fresh fruits of your choice.

Last month I had some photos of inside my studio from Photographer Ben Bonswell.
I thought I'd share some of these as it's a nice insight into the process behind my designs.
All my designs start as a drawing or painting. Everything, even patterns start as a little doddle and are all hand drawn. This photo is a snapshot of one of my desks, I have 2! One for creative mess (above) and one for formatting, designing on the computer. Above is my inspiration wall, I collection all sorts of things everywhere I go, from postcards to paint swatches.
Here's me doodling away, working on a peony illustration. Nothing ever came from this drawing by the way, only a small percentage of designs actually make it to a final product.
Which is all part of being a designer, sometimes ideas are rejected and it's back to the drawing board, or desk!
Above is a close up of some water colour flower heads.
These did make it onto a product, my new age cards which you can see in my online shop.
Sometimes the quick paintings are the best as they are more expressive and are not over worked.

So things have been a little hectic in our household lately! In December we brought home a little miniature dachshund, Bertie. Puppy ownership hit me like a ton of bricks. Bertie is a bundle of both joy and trouble. I'd looked forward to the day we could bring him home for weeks and weeks, and the reality of having a 8 week old puppy was so much harder than I ever imagined. They call it the puppy blues and apparently alot of people go through a stage of feeling hopeless, like you'll never get any sleep again, and like you're world has been turned upside down and now I'm finally coming through it. It's been a roller coaster ride of early starts, 3am screaming, chasing him around telling him not to chew that or don't wee there and stop barking at the cat. He's getting better everyday now and so am I at being a pack leader. I've realised that owning a dog is an on going journey of training them to live in our homes peacefully, to be polite pooches, attentive and well behaved.
Hats off to everyone who had brought up a puppy, it's so much harder than it looks!

Last month I went to London for the Debenhams Spring/Summer 2016 Press Show.
There are two Press shows a year and they are always a spectacular event, showcasing all the new product launches in the months ahead. It's an invite only sort of affair and as it's a really exclusive preview of what will be available in Debenhams in the Spring.
Prestigious journalist's, magazine editors and Bloggers are amongst the select few invited to attend.
I love attending these events as I get to talk directly to all the writers of the glossy magazines and prominent Bloggers about my upcoming collection. It always feels like a celebration of hard work from the me and the Debs team. After months of researching, drawing, designing, altering, formatting, sourcing, sampling and finalising. The products are finally ready to be revealed to the outside world. It's a daunting yet exciting time. Here's a sneak preview for you all of the press show, I'll be posting more close up snaps soon. But for now this is a little teaser.
